Top 20 Smart Cities of India Announced by PM Narendra Modi

Urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu on 28 Jan 2016 announced the first list of 20 cities to be developed as Smart Cities. The Centre on Thursday announced the names of first 20 cities to be developed as Smart Cities in India. There were 97 cities in the Smart City Challenge Competition.

Bhubaneswar, Pune, Jaipur, Surat, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Jabalpur, Visakhapatnam, Solapur, Davangere, Indore, New Delhi (NDMC), Coimbatore, Kakinada, Belgaum, Udaipur, Guwahati, Chennai, Ludhiana, Bhopal are among 20 cities selected for the Smart City project.

Releasing the list of 20 top winners of the Smart Cities competition, Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said a total investment of Rs 50,802 crore has been proposed for the selected Smart Cities and towns during the five year period. These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure through assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took the occasion to congratulate the cities that have been selected for development into Smart Cities of India.
