Dr Atul Nigam Consultant Orthopedic and Joint Replacement Surgeon at Thaltej

Unfortunately, our son Kavil injured his forehead when he fell down off the compound wall on 26 Jul 2014, Saturday. His forehead skin tore apart in 1 inch size and he started bleeding. We put a cotton / cloth and immediately had to rush to the near by Doctor. We first visited children hospital where we normally go for his usual check up for minor health issues but they said that he needs to be stitched and you need to go to a surgeon. We weren’t sure where to find a surgeon who can treat him and stop the blood. We asked there and they suggested to visit Nigam Hospital as it was the nearest one.

When we went there Dr Atul Nigam was not in the hospital. We were told that he has been informed on phone and he is on the way coming to the hospital. We had to wait for almost 10 minutes and Doctor came in. In the meantime, his assistants had cleaned his forehead for Doctor’s treatment. He stitched him (almost 6-7) and had bandage. Though it was a life saving experience for us to get our son immediately treatment, we felt a bit expensive to pay Rs 2000 for stitches and few bucks more for medicines (at in-house medical store). He then asked us to visit 2-3 times for regular dressing (28 Jul, 31 Jul, 4 Aug). Each time we were charged Rs 200 and Rs 300 when they broke stitches. We were asked to put on a tube / cream for healing after removing last bandage and cleaning up. After 8 days (12 Aug), we went again just to show him whether his injury is alright and recovering well as we weren’t sure whether we did it right! We were also charged Rs 200 (again) just to show his injury and take 10 second advice!

I am glad we got an immediate treatment and our son is recovering but we just do not understanding this money-making business. It is so odd to pay for each visit but even more odd to pay for “no treatment visit”. If it is to be called “consultation charges” then i believe when that same Doctor visits a hotel or a vegetable market, they should also ask him pay money for displaying hotel menu and vegetable advice! That can also be covered as “consultation”, can’t it be? In fact, what happens if EVERYBODY starts taking consulting charges? Imagine, going to a movie and a counter boy ask us to pay money for giving advice on availability and selection of seats, a police man ask for money just to catch a thief, a school administration asking for money just to tell us their school features (advice). I don’t understand why most of the Doctors are hungry for money? OK, they have paid huge in the past for study but aren’t they doing this for the whole life? They aren’t given licence only for a year that they are in rush to recover their money!

They should understand what GOD has given them by making them a Doctors. Nobody in the world can interfere what GOD has made us (human) what a Doctor can. They are to be considered as God (saving life of the people) but now they think themselves as money-making machine. We don’t mind paying and we paid what we were asked to pay but what is wrong remains always wrong!
